Key Features of Roofing Calculator app
- Roofing Materials Profiles – you can save your roofing materials prices (including cost of roofing shingles, felt, I&W, roofing nails, ridge vent, drip edge, etc.) as profiles.
- Chimney and Skylight Flashing – Set price to flash chimneys / skylights.
- Waste factor – Set waste factor for Hip and Gable roofs, which we currently estimate at 7.5% for hip roofs and 5% for gable roofs.
- Roof tear-off cost – you can set the cost to tear-off 1, 2 or 3 layers of old roofing materials.
- Number of stories / floors – you can set a certain amount of up-charge for each additional floor in the house, as it costs you more to install a roof on a triple-decker vs. a cape house.
- Total cost to install the roof you can set up your price per roofing square (your base labor price), and the calculator will add your cost per square for materials, chimney and skylight flashing cost, as well as other additional costs.
- Roof Type – you can choose between different roof types (currently Hip and Gable roof) and the calculator will automatically estimate all your sizes and length for hips, eaves, rakes, ridge, etc., and apply the waste factor for a chosen roof type.
- Roof Difficulty – Not every roof is the same, and it is much easier to install a roof on a straight-forward ranch roof, vs. a really cut-up roof with dormers, valleys, side-wall flashing, etc. You can set-up 3 different levels of difficulty: simple, medium and cut-up roof, and save in settings, how much to add per sq. for each difficulty level.
- New plywood – If you have to install new roof deck sheeting / plywood, you can set-up prices for 1/2″, 5/8″ or 3/4″ (really?
) CDX plywood or OSB sheeting.
- Landscape and Portrait mode – whether you prefer to hold you mobile device in one hand or two, the calculator will automatically scale to fit the horizontal / vertical orientation of your phone
Using Roofing Calculator app – video user’s guide:
Below you will find videos that walk you through different screens of the calculator app, showing you how to use this tool to it’s max potential, as well as how to use the basic features.
Using the Roof Calculator – main screen:

Roof pitch: enter the correct pitch of the roof to get accurate measurements on roof size and roofing materials.
Roof type: choose hip or gable roof type.
Roofing materials: out of the box you will have two types of roofing materials (3-tab shingles and Architectural / Laminated shingles), which you can modify as well as add new roofing material types, such as cedar shingles / metal roof, etc.
Number of floors: choose how many floors the home has, and in the general setting, you can choose how much extra you will charge per square, for each additional floor.
Roof difficulty: choose how simple or cut up your roof is – in the general setting, you can choose how much extra you will charge per square for each level of roof difficulty.
Skylights / chimneys: enter the number of chimneys and skylight flashings that are on the roof, and in the general setting, you can choose how much extra you will charge for each flashing type.
Ridge vent: enter the length of ridge vent (if any) that you will be installing. Cost of ridge vent can be changed in the roofing materials profile.
Roof tear-off (strip): choose how many layers of roofing you will strip – in the general setting, you can choose how much extra per square, you will charge for each layer of tear off.

Honestly this is a great app for residential but I do commercial and it doesn’t have enough selections for that. I would pay $20 for this app if it had more roof type and material selections. I would also like to have the option to put in an area instead of length/width.
I do a lot of low slope TPO, standing seam metal, removing old BUR with asbestos material. Just the removal of asbestos increases the cost quite a bit.

Hi Ben,
We will soon be adding commercial roofing section to the calculator, pretty much as it is done here – Commercial Roofing Calculator – it will be added to the update for Android version and in version 1.1 for iPhone / iPad. We have to make many changes and consider many options when adding commercial roofing calculator functionality and the margin of error there is much smaller than in typical residential roofing. We also want to release the iPhone version of the app before making huge changes to Android app.
Just to let you know, if you buy the roofing calculator now, the updates and new features will be free when we add them, so you don’t waste your money.
We are considering adding a line to put in just the roof area, but the problem with that right now is that the calculator will have difficulty when calculating roofing materials, as it takes length / width to calculate trim / ridge caps, ridge vent, and other things.
We will be adding custom fields to the calculator later – both per square and per roof items. Once again it take time to implement all these things at once.
Thank you for your interest.

I purchased your app on my droidx. I would like to know if there is a way to print the results? If I can send it to my computer to print off. I am not sure, but would like to know if possible. It would make your app Outstanding!!!!
Thank you

Howard,
It is not possible at this time, BUT will be possible in the future (hopefully soon) to send results by email, and in fact we want to make it so you could actually send a somewhat formal estimate to the customer / homeowner, with roofing company letterhead, and the price estimate (certain fields), and a full report to yourself. Maybe even a service where all your results could be synced with a CRM / website, and use a GPS to get the job location. All these features will be added as we continue developing the roof calculator app.
However it’s not going to happen right away, as we are working on another major feature right now – multiple roof sections – and that takes priority now, especially that we have to support two separate platforms – Android and iPhone roofing calculator – and that is two separate apps with different coding.
Let me know what else we can add / improve to make the app better for you.
Also – let me know how the app is working out for you in the field – I really want to know, as we get VERY limited feedback from roofers… and I mean REALLY no feedback
As soon as we are ready to release new features, we will post them as updates.
Leo.

cool app but the prices are a bit high for this region, especially since we have adjuster running around telling customer nonsense and shooting down our pricing. Which is very low to begin with..

I bought this software several months ago. When will the updates be available

Hi Cliff,
Our main update project right now is adding multiple roof sections, and we’ve been having issues implementing – in a nut-shell – results of the calculation go into database, and when you have same results from multiple sources (roof sections) going into database, it creates errors which we have not resolved yet. We’ve posted several incremental updates, but are concentrating on roof sections now. We hope to resolve this asap, and publish the new version soon.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
